ADVICE: How to get the most from your interior designer…
-
Start a “Things I Like” file.
As you read your favorite magazines, tear out or photocopy ideas that appeal to you. Living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, gardens etc. Maybe a certain color combination interests you, or a unique kitchen that strikes your fancy. All these things will assist in achieving your ultimate goal. Don’t worry that what you’ve put into your file doesn’t pertain to your immediate project; your decorator will find the cohesive thread and be able to weave it through your final design.
-
Communicate Clearly.
Spend time with your decorator and really discuss what you want. In many cases, time spent up front can be a cost saving measure in the long run.
-
The “3” Word Rule.
You know how you want your room to feel when completed, but it can be difficult to explain that. A good practice is to ask yourself: “When this room is complete, what “3″ words do I want it to say.” For example, “I want this room to be warm, child-friendly and inviting,” or “dramatic, gallery like and impressive.” These are entirely 2 different needs and in “3″ words, you can identify their desires. By visualizing how you want your room to look and feeling how you want to feel when it looks the way you want, you will be closer to achieving your goal.
